Vieunite Presents Biophilic Research at Esteemed PETRA’24

Vieunite recently had the pleasure of presenting our latest research at the PETRA’24 (PErvasive Technologies Related to Assistive Environments) conference, a multi-disciplinary event with a focus on improving the quality of life by exploring assistive technologies based on innovative computational and engineering approaches.

Our biophilic-centric research was the focal point of the presentation, highlighting the discoveries of the collaborative KTP project between Nottingham Trent University and Vieunite’s parent company, Allsee Technologies. This research, titled “Exploring Machine Learning Applications for Biophilic Art Displays to Promote Health and Well-being”, explores the usage of artificial intelligence to build a personalised recommendation system that incorporates biophilic elements to enhance mental well-being through digital display units.

The term ‘Biophilia’ is defined as human being’s innate affiliation to nature, and Biophilic artwork refers to nature-inspired artworks. Research has shown human beings thrive when in proximity to nature or natural elements and, since most urban settings lack the touch of nature, we aim to fill the gap by introducing a digital display unit powered by artificial intelligence. This display will recommend biophilic artwork as a therapeutic prescription, ultimately improving the viewer’s wellbeing.

By leveraging machine learning algorithms, we have developed an innovative system that categorises and recommends biophilic artwork based on emotional responses of users. Our initial findings underscore a significant reduction in negative emotions and a boost in positive ones, affirming the profound impact of nature-inspired art in urban settings.

This research not only supports the integration of nature into built environments but also calls for the development of inclusive, emotionally responsive art databases to further promote health and well-being.

A big thank you to PETRA for hosting us and giving us a platform to present our research. This was an incredibly insightful event and we look forward to future collaborations.
