The Crossing at St Pauls served as a bustling hub for the West Midlands photography scene on Saturday, May 9th. Across the busy visual expo at FotoFest 2026 in Walsall, Vieunite had the privilege of connecting with a vibrant community of serious artists, from semi-professionals to full-time commercial photographers who take immense pride in their own craft.
Amidst the engaging workshops, panel discussions, and exhibitions from leading industry brands, Vieunite’s Cultural Director, Dr Benedict Carpenter van Barthold, took to the stage. His presentation addressed a quiet frustration that unites modern creatives: finding a professional alternative to photo printing that doesn’t compromise on physical authenticity.
If you missed us in Walsall, you can watch Benedict’s full presentation below.
Why Photographers Need a Professional Alternative to Printing
As a dedicated photographer, you likely travel with an expensive camera and spend hours in Lightroom refining your vision. You understand resolution, colour grading, and texture intuitively. Yet, despite this meticulous dedication, the vast majority of those hard-won images end up hidden away. As Benedict highlighted during his presentation, these are the files “that languish in the cloud gathering digital dust unseen and unrecognised.”
Historically, the only way to truly validate and exhibit that talent was through physical media. However, many creatives are frustrated by the prohibitive cost and absolute permanence of ordering large-scale physical prints of their work.
Technology has allowed us to take more photographs than ever before, but it has also led to the problem of the badly displayed image. “We all know that while technology lets us share work instantly, traditional screens lack the soul of a physical print,” Benedict explained to the FotoFest audience. “They show the image, but they kind of get in the way. They diminish the photographic presence.”
The Canvas Your Craft Demands
If you spent hours perfecting the shot, then we’ve got the canvas to do it justice.
The Vieunite Textura canvas is designed to offer print-quality photographic presence without the financial or environmental cost of physical printing. Engineered to capture the subtle grain and heft of matte photography, the Textura effectively restores physical presence to the digital medium.
By eliminating the glare and artificiality of standard monitors, we provide an exhibition-grade portfolio in your own home. Whether you are using the 4K 55-inch display, the high-definition 27-inch screen, or the 1K+ square 33-inch format, the canvas allows you to exhibit your personal portfolio with the textural depth and colour accuracy your work demands. Unlike traditional wet photography or digital prints, this is an exhibition format you can keep effortlessly updated, with zero cost.
The Living Album: Preserving The Family Narrative
While the Textura canvas enables artists to curate their own rotating private exhibitions, it also serves a deeply emotional purpose for those who act as the custodian of their family history.
During his FotoFest presentation, Benedict posed a compelling proposition to the wedding and family photographers in attendance. Rather than simply delivering a digital file, photographers can offer their clients a way to honour their family narrative in a format that feels substantial, permanent yet adaptable.
Benedict described the Textura as a “living album. It’s an album that can be added to effortlessly over time.” When major family milestones occur – weddings, births, or significant birthdays – these memories deserve more than a passing glance on a smartphone.
By framing the canvas as a museum-quality vault for cherished memories, we move completely away from the outdated concept of a digital “slideshow”. Instead, it becomes a living chronicle for the fluid home, allowing families to celebrate their proudest moments on a canvas that grows alongside them.
